Security Self Storage is passionate about being a responsible steward of the local environment in which we do business. Part of this commitment includes reducing the carbon footprint of our self storage facilities by harnessing alternative energy, using the sunny space of our self storage facilities to generate green solar power.

Store-Green is a new concept in self storage. Security Self Storage is creating “green storage” by harnessing solar energy and using eco-friendly practices throughout our facilities. We hope that when people need self storage, truck rental or moving supplies, they will consider a company that cares about the environment in their community and choose Security Self Storage. Following in the footsteps of national businesses like Whole Foods and Toyota, Security Self Storage is addressing the Triangle consumer’s growing demands for eco-friendly services. While manufactured products such as hybrid cars are now becoming common, some service businesses with no obvious connection to the environment are also at the forefront of the “green” movement. Security Self Storage, based in Raleigh, NC is leading the way in this effort, having recently completed a solar photovoltaic assembly that is one of the largest in the region. The solar panels produce 10 kilowatts of electricity, enough to supply a significant portion of the facility’s electrical needs. The solar panels are prominently displayed on three large 20 foot towers in front of it's Tryon Rd at Gorman St., Raleigh location. "You can’t miss the pole mounted arrays as you drive down Tryon Rd. We are excited about being the first green self storage in NC and we hope the solar towers will encourage others to embrace renewable energy and reduce their environmental footprint”, said Board member Dr. Michael Chancellor. Working with NC Green Power, an independent non-profit organization (www.ncgreenpower.org) supported by NC Utilities, and Bob McGuffey of NCSU Solar Center, (www.ncsc.ncsu.edu), Security Self Storage designed the largest “feed back” solar photovoltaic system installed on Progress Energy’s grid to that date. While producing clean renewable solar electricity, the system will also avoid an estimated 25,000 lbs of carbon dioxide, 75 lbs of sulfur dioxide and 30 lbs of nitrogen dioxide as well as mercury emissions each year. Security Self Storage is a locally owned self-storage company, founded in 1993 with seven locations in the Triangle. We are dedicated to providing quality storage service while practicing responsible environmental stewardship and promoting environmental awareness in the communities we serve.
